7 Ideas To Make Meal Prep Fun Again
Any healthy lifestyle will require a little bit of work, and the Paleo diet is no exception. When you’re focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables, ethically-raised meat, and staying away from processed goods, it takes a bit more elbow grease in the kitchen to stay on track.
Planning ahead and keeping your fridge stocked with nutritious and convenient snacks is one of the biggest keys to success when it comes to reclaiming your health, but sadly in our overworked culture, many people don’t make the necessary time for food prep.
They’re stressed with work deadlines, house projects, misbehaving children, and all the other things that come with modern American life. So they procrastinate on meal planning and shopping, and wait until the last possible minute to do all that washing and chopping.
Maybe you are finding it hard to stick to your new Paleo diet because you’re overwhelmed with the amount of fresh food you have to handle each week. Or you’re making time for food prep, but it’s starting to feel like a chore.
Regardless of how you feel about being in the kitchen, it’s a great idea to learn to love and cherish your culinary creation time. So if you’re feeling burnt out, or need some motivation to tackle that giant bag of carrots sitting in your fridge, here are seven ideas to make your meal prep time fun!
One of the easiest ways that we can boost our moods, anytime and anywhere, is with music! Cooking is so much more fun when you can listen to your favorite new album, a classic soundtrack, or a great new radio station.
Choose something that makes you feel happy and alert, but still able to focus. Feel free to shake your booty a little bit, or sing along with the lyrics while you slice and dice away!
Expand your palette
Let’s face it, the best part of all the food prep is when you finally get to eat the finished product, knowing that it’s not only delicious but also nourishing to your body. Meal prep becomes a whole lot more fun when you’re not making the same dishes week in and week out, and you actually have something new to look forward to.
Try to include at least 1-2 new recipes each week that include ingredients that may be outside your comfort zone. (We include different make-ahead meals every week in our flagship meal plans. Click here for more information!)
Invite your family
All that washing, chopping, and cooking goes a lot faster when you have extra hands in the kitchen, so don’t be afraid to recruit your spouse, older children, or friends for prep time. You’ll be able to catch up with each other, laugh and joke around, and make lasting memories, all while creating healthy snacks and dishes for your upcoming week. Now, that’s a win-win!

Have the right tools
When you are getting into the Paleo lifestyle, you’ll probably face new recipes and techniques that may call for new tools that you might not have in your kitchen. Don’t let yourself get frustrated and give up because you are toiling over a particular method, and start to plan ahead. A few simple tools can go a long way to making your primal kitchen run smoothly, so don’t be afraid to invest wisely.
Our BPA-free meal prep containers (click here to get your FREE set of 7!) are great for safely storing your food, for example.
While it’s not smart to try and write emails while doing food prep, there are a few ways to make your kitchen session do double-time. Give yourself a clay mask facial, call up a friend to catch up, touch up your roots, or practice your speech for next week’s conference. Just be sure to pick things that don’t take too much brainpower, so you can stay safe with those sharp knives!
If you’re even the slightest bit Type A, food and meal prep goes much easier when you have a system in place. Splurge on a new set of BPA-free meal prep containers or mason jars for easy storage, and come up with a fun labeling system for the different days of the week or the people in your household.
Get creative here! Whip out the label maker, colored stickers, craft tape, and make a storage station for easy placement of fresh cut veggies and high protein snacks.
For something a little different, you can make your meal prep time one big moving meditation, and really connect with your food and use your five senses on a whole new level. Center yourself in the moment, paying close attention to the smells, colors, and textures of the ingredients. Give yourself time to touch and taste everything you’re preparing, and start to pour a bit more of your soul into your Paleo meals!
No matter how busy your life is, setting aside time to tackle all those fresh groceries can help you stay on track and feel good about your new healthy lifestyle. But chopping and dicing doesn’t have to be a chore, and it certainly doesn’t need to be boring!
Try out these seven tips, and before you know it, you’ll be looking forward to spending time in the kitchen. Plus, all that planning ahead can help you have a smoother schedule, higher self-esteem, and of course, a smaller waistline!
